The sapwood is well defined yellow in colour. The heartwood is pinkish when fresh and darkens to a bright orange-red or deep brown. Ripple marks are generally distinct. Due to its density and interlocking grain, it is suitable for heavy construction, railway sleepers, transmission posts, beams, joists, bridges, wharves, fence posts, piling, parquet and strip flooring, panelling, heavy-duty furniture, heavy-duty pallets, boxes, crates and tool handles.
Kempas is relatively inexpensive for an imported timber, though not commonly available, except as flooring planks.
